Frequently Asked Questions
Thinking about returning to education but not sure if it's right for you?
You're not alone. Many adults have questions about coming back to learning.
You may may find the answers you are looking for below. If not, our friendly Information, Advice and Guidance team is here to help you explore your options and find the right path for you.
I'm not sure what course is right for me
That's absolutely fine. You don't need to have it all worked out before you get in touch. Our Information, Advice and Guidance team can help you explore your options, understand progression routes and identify courses that match your interests, experience and goals. There's no pressure - just a conversationto help you figure out your next step.
What if I've been out of education for a long time?
Many of our adult learners are returning to study after years away - sometimes decades. Our tutors understand what it feels like and will support you as you move through your course at your own pace.
You’ll also be learning alongside other adults who are often in exactly the same position, which makes a real difference.
Can I fit studying around work and family commitments?
Yes. Many adult learners balance their studies with jobs, caring responsibilities and busy home lives. Our adult courses are designed with this in mind. Many run during the day, in the evenings, or online, so you can find an option that works around your job, your family and everything else life involves. If you tell us a little about your week, we can help you find something that genuinely fits.
I don’t have any GCSEs. Can I still join a course?
Entry requirements vary by course, but many of our adult courses don’t require any previous qualifications to get started.
We also offer English and Maths courses, including Functional Skills and GCSEs, which can help you build the foundations you need to progress to higher levels of study. If you are not sure whether a course is right for you, just ask us and we will point you in the right direction.
I'm worried I won't be good enough
It's natural to feel nervous about starting something new.
Adult learners often bring valuable life experience, workplace skills and determination to their studies. You don't need to know everything before you start. Our tutors’ job is to meet you where you are and help you progress from there. You don’t need to have all the answers before you start.
Will I get support if I need it?
Yes. From enrolment onwards, you’ll have access to support from your tutor and from our specialist teams, who can help with everything from study skills and careers advice, to wellbeing and financial guidance.
If you have a disability, learning difficulty, neurodivergent profile, mental health condition or health need, our Additional Learning Support team can work with you before you start to make sure the right support is in place.
How much will it cost?
Less than you might expect, and for many learners, nothing at all. A number of our courses are fully-funded for eligible adults.
Where fees do apply, financial support may be available - and government loans don’t need to be repaid until your income is above £25,000 a year. Our team will talk you through exactly what applies to your situation before you commit to anything.
Will this help me progress in my career?
For many of our students, it has been the turning point. Whether your goal is a promotion, a change of direction, a qualification you never had the chance to gain, or simply to gain greater confidence in your current role, adult learning can make a difference. If you’re not yet sure where you want to go, that’s fine too. Sometimes the right course helps you work that out.
